Evren Sungur’s first solo exhibition at Art on Istanbul will be on view between 21 October and 25 November 2017 at the gallery’s space at Tepebaşı.
Evren Sungur, who is the only Turkish artist included in “100 Painters of Tomorrow”, published by Thames and Hudson, has created a new series of works that bring into play fragmentary images placed in prisms, for his solo exhibition “Personator”. On the large scale canvases featured in the exhibition, thick layers of oil paint, bold and vivid colors, graphic elements, and crowded compositions, all of which are peculiar to the artist, are captured in prisms defined by white lines on the paintings’ surface.
The artist uses the word “personator,” which gives its name to the new series and to the exhibition, as “a machine-like creator of personae, a constructor of identities.” Focusing on human beings looking for a new identity as his subject matter, Sungur, uses the images that he chose for his compositions as the building blocks for these new personae. The independent images making up the paintings evoke the most powerful, and yet the most delicate scenes relating to past events or situations engraved in the memories, dreams, traumas, hopes, experiences, and knowledge not only of the artist but also of the viewers.
These independent images, which come together through a process that is both analytic and intuitive, are far from making up a story. Rather, just like the personal history of a character analyzed by a psychoanalyst, these images gather their meanings as the viewers plunge further into their depths. Even though the artist avoids putting together a story using these fragments, the complex images invite the viewers to interpret the paintings. While the artist does not obey the rules of perspective, physics, gravity, and force, and is not loyal to the real sizes of objects, the prism itself constitutes a solid structure.
Evren Sungur’s works have been characterized by a bold and vivid palette, thick paint textures, and multi-layered and crowded compositions. Ever since his first exhibition in 2010, Sungur explore binary oppositions in a powerful manner, such as woman-man, civil-political, death-life, nature-human beings, interpreted from the perspective of human nature, evolution, existence, and power relationships in a powerful manner. The works included in this exhibition, on the other hand, create an upbeat and hopeful ambiance for the viewers, as a result of the vividness and harmony of the colors used by the artist in contrast with the negativity and the drama embodied in the above-mentioned issues.
Evren Sungur was born in Istanbul in 1980. He graduated from the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Yeditepe University in 2002, and then studied sculpture in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Sungur held three solo exhibitions entitled “Live Broadcast” (Akademililer Art Center, İstanbul, 2010), “Tour de Force” (Gallery Zilberman, Istanbul, 2012), and “Organic Machines - Sketch for a Sculpture” (Summart Art Center, Istanbul, 2015). His works were exhibited in “100 Painters of Tomorrow” (Beers Contemporary, London, 2014) and START London (London, 2016). He participated in art fairs in Istanbul, Berlin, Marrakech, Basel, and London. His works were featured in the book entitled “100 Painters of Tomorrow,” published by Thames & Hudson. Currently, he continues his work in his atelier in Beyoğlu, Istanbul.
