Art On İstanbul is proud to announce that it will be participating in the 13th edition of Contemporary İstanbul between 20-23rd of September. The exhibition that will be held by Art On İstanbul as part of this event will feature works by Mithat Şen, Canan Dağdelen, Ali Elmacı, Evren Sungur, Burcu Erden, Ahmet Çerkez, Erman Özbaşaran, Olcay Kuş, Onur Mansız, Olgu Ülkenciler and Nilhan Sesalan.
A recent addition to the represented artists, Oddviz, an artist collective will start the season with their exhibition “İnventory” opening on September 11th. Oddviz, comprised of Çağrı Taşkın, Serkan Kaptan and Erdal İnci, will be showing photogrammetric virtual installations and prints from their series “İnventory”. With Photogrammetric scans of various objects or places in New York, Berlin, Venice and İstanbul, they incorporate the object’s nature and the aura of the city into their compositions. At the fair, an animation from the exhibition and diasec prints will be shown.
After presenting Mithat Şen’s marble sculptures for the first time in İstanbul at the fair last year, this year the booth will feature his large-scale outdoor sculpture. The artist builds his sculpture “Zen” from the “İstif” series with a simple expression of the body alphabet, to portray a calm and subtle fluctuation despite the mass and weight of the material. İn this series 13 units that are purposed by Mithat Şen in his paintings are coded and re-used like a body alphabet.
Canan Dağdelen, an important ceramic artist of her generation, known by her spherical installations will be featured at the fair with two works from her hammam series. Her hammam series demonstrates the artist’s interest in architecture and architectural forms with a plain and powerful manner.
A recent addition to the artist that are represented by Art On İstanbul, Ali Elmacı, will show a relief sculpture series at the fair for the first time. The artist draws inspiration from the forms of animal trophies to create his female sculptures. With the use of monochrome neon colours the female figures resemble forms of a ection and with the landscape drawn on the background portray the stylistic features of the artist. Ali Elmacı draws attention to oppressive systems like government authorities, class di erences, bureaucracy and militarism. The exhibited sculptures will serve as a preview for the artist’s upcoming exhibition “Blood Spoils the Dream” that will be show in March 2019.
Evren Sungur who will be shown with a solo booth at Untitled Miami will exhibit his 4-meter-long diptych piece in continuation of his “Madness Train” series at the Contemporary İstanbul for the first time. New works that follow his “Personator” exhibition will also take place at the fair.
With her figurative wood sculptures Burcu Erden, examines scale and position through the relationship between the sculpture and the viewer. By leaving the lines of her production process untouched, the artist characterizes the unfinishedness of her works as her own stylistic feature. Her large-scale wood figures, previously done public projects, will be exhibited at the fair for the first time.
Erman Özbaşaran’s new works that will be presented at the fair this year serve as a continuation of his solo show “The Prospect of Hope” held at Art On İstanbul in 2017. The artist works with oil on canvas and draws inspiration from architectural detail photographs he takes from ancient ruins. In his compositions Erman Özbaşaran creates planes and scenes that are falling or caught mid-air. He examines the relationship with nature, history and culture in his compositions that are joined by ancient ruins and abstract landscapes.
Art On Istanbul will present the solo exhibitions of Burcu Erden and Ali Elmacı, and two curatorial exhibitions; 99 Squares and Part Whole II later in the season.
