Composed of Erdal İnci, Çağrı Taşkın and Serkan Kaptan, the artist collective Oddviz’s solo show “Inventory” can be seen at Art On İstanbul between 11 September- 25 October 2018.
Oddviz is continuing its two yearlong 3-dimensional scanning with their series “İnventory”. This series consists of scans from İstanbul, Venice, New York and Berlin. With the use of photogrammetry artists scan street furniture, sculptures and façades with their own constructed compositions. Virtual placements created in a computerized environment will be exhibited as c-prints, video and virtual reality works during the exhibition.
These placements created by the artists, scrutinize Kadıköy, Kreuzberg, Manhattan and Venice according to specific characteristics qualities unique to each city. Based off of Manhattan’s grid structure and the topography created by the skyscrapers, the artists chose fire hydrants, post boxes, and several other public objects to position on pedestals to create an unseen cityscape.
The collective, chose Berlin’s cosmopolitan neighborhood Kreuzberg that houses artists, students and a large immigrant population. Focusing on the façades of the buildings, the works convey how an alternative and creative urban profile leaves its marks on the structure of the city.
In Venice the artists chose to highlight the wells and water fountains of the city. They are re-interpreting the relationship between the city and its waterways by concentrating on the characteristic elements crucial to the cultural heritage of Venice.
Artists who work and live in Kadıköy, being inspired by the chaotic and everchanging quality of the neighborhood randomly pile bollards, an Ottoman water fountain and a bull sculpture that is a symbol of the area. With the interpretation of Oddviz, these unnoticed objects that are a part of the city’s texture get to be documented and transformed through a new arrangement.
By using photogrammetry, a new media tool, artists have the opportunity to document objects and places in a three-dimensional photorealistic manner. By using this technique, they incorporate the object’s nature and the aura of the city into their compositions.
With the series “Inventory”, Oddviz captures the marks left on cities by time and its inhabitants in a visual archive to resemble a city museum to fit the city’s soul and reassembles them.
